Aesthetic Treatment Complications Course

This course is held by an external provider Gillian Murray. This interactive session has a large scope, is ‘learning intense’, but is a very enjoyable session and everyone is invited to ask questions and discuss as we go.

Delivery is a combination of teaching, discussion, and cases. There are lots of visuals to aid understanding and development of assessment skills

Who should attend?

This course is suitable for foundation level trained medical professionals looking to further their knowledge base.

You do not need to have gained your foundation level training with The Devon and Cornwall Aesthetics Academy. We will need proof of foundation training at time of booking.

What is covered on this course?

  • Vascular events
    Pathophysiology, stages, assessment and treatment, key to good management, minimising risk, and patient experience
  • Visual disturbance
    Pathophysiology, anatomy, different ocular presentations, assessment and action, bedside vs secondary care management, and risk reduction
  • Hyaluronidase
    Pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, allergy risk, intradermal tests, elective and emergency use.
  • Bruising
    Minimising bruising, medication, importance of medical history, Hyaluronidase and haematomas, vascular occlusion and haematomas.
  • HSV1
    Pathophysiology, triggers, HSV1 vs Varicella-zoster, minimising risks, contraindications and cautions, differential diagnosis, managing and preventing.
  • Acute Infection
    Pathogenesis, risk factors, skin disinfecting, assessment and diagnosis, abscess vs cellulitis, treatment considerations, and management.
  • Delayed Onset Nodules
    Pathology of normal response and description of the different pathological mechanisms for DONs. Assessment and an attempt at diagnosis. Risk assessment and management.

About the Trainer

Gillian Murray (MPharm PG Dip Clin Pharm PG Dip Minor Illness NMP) has been working in aesthetics since 2014.

She is a founding boarding member of the ‘Complications in Medical Aesthetics Collaborative’ (CMAC), a global complications support group. She has a vast experience in complications management, having published several papers on the subject. Her teaching style is very relaxed but informative, with the aim of helping injectors feel more comfortable and in control with complications.

In addition to her aesthetic practice she holds both a senior lecturer and clinical academic position at Kings College London University. Gillian has taught on many multidisciplinary post graduate programmes, mainly in her specialist subject; complex disease states and how this alters pharmacokinetics of drugs. She also supports the delivery of the clinically enhanced prescribing programme (CEPIP).

Gillian has 16 years’ experience working in acute trusts within the NHS predominately in her area of speciality, surgery and intensive care medicine. She has held the positions of directorate pharmacist to many surgical disciplines including plastics, burns, intensive care, vascular and to medical disciplines such as acute medicine, dermatology and rheumatology.

She has a specialist interest in hypersensitivity reaction in aesthetics, hyaluronic acid gel chemistry, rheology and behaviours, and through her position at KCL she is currently undertaking research in these areas.
